Country UK
Spirit Type Gin
Brand Ableforths
Size 70cl
ABV 57%
Serving Suggestion Great in a Gin & Tonic, but even better with ginger beer! Let the spicy cinnamon of this spirit play with the spiciness of ginger beer.

This is the Navy-Strength edition of the famous Bathtub Gin from Ableforth's. As well as boasting a higher ABV than the original Bathtub Gin, this edition also has a bigger botanical punch thanks to the 'bashing up' of the botanicals to release more flavour. An intense botanical explosion of cardamom, clove, coriander, citrus and, of course, juniper berries.

Bathtub Gin's origins are often misunderstood. It takes its name from days when cheaper, compounded gins would purportedly be topped off with water from a bathtub tap (as the bottles were too tall to fit into a sink). Ironically, in our modern times, the production method used in the creation of this superb gin are amongst the most expensive in the world.

Technically speaking, compound gin involves flavourings (such as botanicals) simply being added to neutral grain spirit and then filtered out before bottling. Although there are many other technicalities surrounding how it is done, compound gins just infuse whereas distilled gins infuse and then distil.

Many of the cheapest supermarket home brands used to employ cold compounding when producing gin on a commercial scale. Using artificial flavourings resulted in much cheaper production costs, thus larger profit margins. Because of this it has long been seen as an inferior method of creating gin. The technique is not used that frequently anymore as it's now actually a lot easier and faster to create consistent gin in high volumes by doing colossal distillation runs, rather than macerating botanicals and filtering it or by simply adding artificial flavourings to Vodka. It has always been possible to create a good gin using cold compounding and that with care and attention the resulting spirit created can be a balanced, well rounded gin. Master of Malt's Bathtub Gin goes a long way in demonstrating this.
