2 shots of Bertha’s Revenge gin, 3 shots of sloe gin, 1 shot fresh lime juice, ¾ shot elderflower cordial, 2 fresh blackberries, 2 frozen blackberries(for the garnish), 4 lumps of ice, 1 cocktail shaker, 2 Chilled Martini glasses<

Sloe Bertha is a fabulous sweet, smooth, warming tipple made by infusing wild sloes with Bertha’s Revenge Gin. The wild ripe sloe berries are picked from the Autumn hedgerows around Ballyvolane House and beyond, and are steeped in Bertha’s Revenge Gin for several months with sugar syrup added at the end to sweeten.

A bit like a good dog, Sloe Bertha is a welcome companion when taking to the great outdoors over the winter. A few sips of Sloe Bertha will renew flagging enthusiasm when cold, wet and watching a match from the sidelines.  Equally, it will serve to gird the loins when facing the final hill of the day.

Ideal for sipping on cold days, or as an ingredient in a Hedgerow Martini!

Like any good Irish tale, the story behind the Bertha’s Revenge Gin is a tapestry of good fortune, endeavour and passion. The Ballyvolane House Spirits Company was established in May 2015 and is a privately-owned, passionately-run little business based on the grounds of Ballyvolane House near Castlelyons in Co. Cork.

A former dairy farm, Ballyvolane literally translates from Gaelic as ‘the place of the leaping heifers’ - a testament to the fertility and natural diversity of the land on which the estate lies. Using whey alcohol from the local dairy farmers in Cork, together with natural well water and an interesting mix of locally foraged and grown botanicals, they distillery has created a hand-crafted gin that highlights the character of Bertha in her prime.

Bertha, or ‘Big Bertha’ as she was known, was a legendary Droimeann cow from Sneem in Co. Kerry. She was reared locally, and was bought as a calf by a farmer called Jerome O’Leary.

When she died on New Year’s Eve 1993, just 3 months shy of her 49th birthday, she had become something of a local celebrity. Over the course of her long life she had given birth to 39 calves, and this achievement, together with her tremendous age, had earned her an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

When the distillery were thinking of a name for the gin, they wanted to find something that was eye-catching, distinctive and that dove-tailed with the pedigree of what they are working with. The dairy farming heritage of Ballyvolane, the use of whey alcohol in the gin, and a shared love of the gorgeous and gentle characters that can be found only in Ireland led only to Bertha. To immortalise her memory, she has been brought back in spirit, literally!!
