The wine trade was obviously waiting with great anticipation for the 2002 vintage, and when it landed in March 2014 it was clear to see why. Golden with subtle highlights to the eye, the nose was met with aromas of stewed ripe fruit and an underlying tone of honey.

These are followed by roasted notes and cocoa, which are then surpassed by nutmeg and star anise. A full bodied and complex attack on the palate, yet well balanced and persistent. Touches of lemon reveal a pleasing bitterness paired with a long, mineral finish. A true modern classic.

Since 1952, small parcels of certain vintages of La Grande Année have been kept on the lees for extended ageing, and then released years later as this unique wine. Only the most promising of the Bollinger La Grande Annee vintages can hope to become R.D.

These cuvees are given even more time in the cellar to encourage the slow evolution of aromas, as well as a redefinition of structure and a lingering finish. The lively freshness amazes and enchants, while the aromatic expression intrigues.

These wines improve with age and may be enjoyed immediately or allowed to continue ageing after disgorgement (the 2002 vintage is of course ready now, but for optimum results it is best saved for between 2015-2022), reserving additional characteristics for the future. Bollinger R.D. wines are both a homage to the best that the terroir and time has to offer and a gift to lovers of great wines.
