A favourite of the rich and famous. Brilliant clarity with delicate pale gold nuances, combined with an ultra-fine, persistent, soft effervescence. The immediate aroma is highly expressive of the elegance and precision of Chardonnay; white fruit, sweet pollen, fine citrus fruit and very pure minerality. After a few minutes the aromas develop to more confit, lightly grilled notes, almost becoming generous yet remaining precise and impeccably refined.

The impression on the palate is full and creamy, revealing a fine concentration of stone fruits; nectarine, fresh apricot and peach. This silky, textured concentration, which is both dense and soft - and typical of great Pinot Noirs - is intervowen with a sophisticated touch of acidity, bringing the wine alive with minerality. The overriding impression is one of a true harmony of flavours, senses and silky textures...absolute sensuality.

Cristal, a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot noir is the prestige cuvée of Champagne Louis Roederer - one of the largest remaining independent Champagne Houses, owned by the same family since it was founded in 1776.

Initially founded as Dubois Père & Fils in 1776, Louis Roederer inherited the company from his uncle in 1833, renamed it and set out to target markets abroad.  With concentrated efforts in several countries, including Russia, In 1909, Tsar Nicholas II nominated Louis Roederer as the official wine supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia.

Though the Russian Revolution and the U.S. Prohibition caused financial difficulties during the early 20th century, Roederer was re-established as a leading Grandes Marques producer and remains in the ownership of descendants Rouzaud - a family of leading Wine Specialists.

From a vineyard area of 240 hectares (590 acres), Louis Roederer produces two thirds of the grapes needed for its production, sourcing the remaining required fruit from established farming contacts.

Cristal was first created in 1876 for Alexander II of Russia, and is viewed by many as the first prestige cuvée. As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was unstable, the Tsar feared assassination. He ordered that champagne bottles for his Three Emperors Dinner be made clear, so that he could see the bubbles and also to prevent hiding a bomb within them, as could happen with a typical dark green bottle. Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear lead glass Champagne bottle with a flat bottom. The Champagne has since become known as "Cristal" and is still presented in a flat-bottomed clear, "crystal" bottle, with it's characteristc anti-UV cellophane wrapper, and gold label.

Produced uniquely during the best years, when the Chardonnay (40%) and Pinot Noir (60%) grapes have attained perfect maturity, Cristal is aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement.

Widespread awareness of its high price has given the wine an image of exclusivity that, in turn, has elevated demand.
