This firm rich claret is from a 150 year old cellar situated just north of Fronsac on Bordeaux's Right Bank, very close to Pomerol. Wines this side of the Garonne all rely on Merlot, in this red producing a classic gently oaked style with lush fruit. On the nose, there are ripe red fruits with smoky tobacco notes and a hint of oak. These aromas continue onto the silky palate along with lushous red fruits and a more earthy tobacco, which nicely complements the chewy but not overpowering tannins. This fruit forward 2014 is best decanted, then served with roast red meats.

Some of Bordeaux's top names have recognised the potential of Pomerol's neighbour, Fronsac. Its wines tend to be a touch more rustic than those from Pomerol and Saint Emilion, with a characteristic freshness and tannic bite - perfect with lamb. Chteau Gromel Bel Air lies just beyond the Fronsac boundary, on a very similar terroir and boasts some of the highest vineyards in the area. The limestone soils bring out a dense fruit character in the Merlot and are also good for Cabernet Sauvignon, not always easy to grow on this side of the Dordogne. The 27 hectare estate dates back to 1855 and today produces two award winning cuves.
