The elegant Marlborough red.  The harvest of 2014 has supplied reputedly the best Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir to date. All the structural interest of 2010, with an unprecedented freshness and varietal lift. A wide array of red berry and cherry flavours, true to classic Pinot Noir.

This is a balanced and lively expression of Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region. Powerful bouquet and a wide selection of flavours, from the lighter spectrum of rose, violet and ripe berry fruit to dark cherry with a hint of luscious plum.  A seamless structure and concentrated palate, framed with ripe silky tannins and complex spicy oak and herbal notes. Long and fleshy.

The vineyards of Cloudy Bay are located at superior sites throughout the Marlborough region to maximise the considerable diversity that exists in micro-climates and soil types. The different sites provide nuances of aroma and flavour, bringing complexity to the wines. Cloudy Bay's first commercial vintage was produced in 1985 from purchased grapes, and the company later planted its own vineyards. It was one of the first New Zealand wines to be widely exported and came to attention because of its fruit-forward style and very pronounced varietal character.


Grapes for this wine were sourced from carefully selected sites located within the southern Wairau Valley including the Mustang and Barracks vineyards. The soils have a clay base with aged alluvial gravels that provide good drainage. This soil structure allows a relatively consistent availability of water to the vines through the summer months, minimising water stress to the pinot noir vines. The vines are all pruned and trained to a two-cane, vertically shoot positioned canopy with an average yield of 5 tonnes/hectare. 
p>The harvest of 2014 supplied reputedly the best Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir to date. The picking of Pinot Noir began on March 9th and was completed by April 1st. The timing was perfect as significant rainfall arrived on April 9th.

The Pinot Noir fruit was de-stemmed into small open top stainless steel tanks and cold soaked for several days. The fermentations were carried out with indigenous yeast, with a peak temperature of 32°C. During the fermentation, the caps were plunged to ensure gentle and complete extraction of tannins, colour and flavours. Following three weeks on skins, each batch was transferred into French oak barrels (35% new) and matured for 12 months. The wine was then carefully assembled before bottling.
