The Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is an exceptional expression of Marlborough and the flagship variety from the Winery. Since 1985, Cloudy Bay has built a reputation for refined Sauvignon Blanc and the 2017 vintage is no exception. Bright, lifted citrus aromatics of kaffir lime and grapefruit abound, supported by ripe nectarine-like notes. An elegant, concentrated palate reveals juicy stone fruit and lemongrass, supported by a lovely minerality. Its crisp acidity leads to a mouth-watering and persistent finish, suggesting a sauvignon blanc with ageability.

Cloudy Bay was established by David Hohnen, of Cape Mentelle fame, in 1985.The winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770.

Cloudy Bay's staggering success can be attributed to its ground-breaking Sauvignon Blanc, as well as its distinctive labels, which reflect the skyline of the nearby Richmond Ranges, now owned by Veuve Clicquot.

Grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc are sourced from estate and grower vineyards located in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott sub-regions of the Wairau Valley. Soils range from free draining stony on the valley floor to aged alluvial loams containing some clay.

The majority of fruit is grown on a vertical-shoot-positioned trellis, with a small number of blocks on Scott-Henry. Fermentation is primarily carried out in stainless steel tanks with a mixture of cultured yeasts and wild yeast. Approximately 3% of the blend is usually fermented at warmer temperatures in old French oak barriques and large format vats. The Sauvignon is always stringently blended, to include only the best batches.
