Created by Darren De Bortoli, the Black Noble was inspired by a 1930s wine made by his grandfather, Vittorio De Bortoli who first established De Bortoli Wines in 1928.

Amber with olive green hue, the bouquet has hints of toffee, coffee, raisins and mandarin peel. Unique and delicious, the palate reveals rich raisin and dried date fruit with hints of citrus peel, toffee and caramel flavours. Concentrated and viscous, it displays a lingering aged complexity.

Vittorio’s son Deen De Bortoli expanded the winery and, with his children’s help, established De Bortoli’s reputation for premium wine.  This includes their iconic dessert wine, Noble One, first created by Darren at the family winery in Bilbul in 1982. 

Noble One has gone on to be one of the most awarded wines in history, garnering more than 130 trophies and 406 Gold medals both nationally and internationally.

The Black Noble is a fortified wine made using the same parcels harvested for the Noble One. Only the most botrytised Semillon grapes are picked in order to have intense and ripe botrytised flavours. The Black Noble is one of the only fortifieds on the market to be made from botrytis grapes. Very little fermentation occurs before fortification when a neutral grape spirit is added to inhibit further fermentation. The wine is then clarified and a touch of brandy is added for further complexity before being transferred into used Noble One barriques.

Best served with sticky date pudding. Try poured over vanilla ice cream or with a cheese platter after dinner.

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Guiseppina De Bortoli in 1928, who emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy. The De Bortoli family story is one of determination and triumph that started nearly 90 years ago in war-torn Europe and is now told, generations later, across Australia.

Vittorio De Bortoli journeyed from Castelcucco to New South Wales and the following year arrives in Griffith (formally known as Bagtown). The flat plains and red earth are very different to the hills of Treviso. Giuseppina arrives in Australia the next year and is reunited with her fiancee Vittorio. Vittorio purchases a 55 acre mixed fruit farm. That year there is a glut of shiraz grapes, many farmers see it cheaper to let them rot but Vittorio takes them for free and crushes 15 tonnes of shiraz grapes. Local Italians and other European workers in the area offer to buy wine off him. De Bortoli Wines is born. The next year, Vittorio and Giuseppina get married on the farm.

Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, expanded and consolidated the business and Deen’s children have established De Bortoli’s reputation for premium wine. Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values of the wine production. There is a culture of hard work and generosity – with plenty of sharing of good food and good wine.

To make this Port Wine, Fruit is allowed to stay on the vine until it is very sweet and there an intense concentration of flavours has developed. After crushing and partial fermentation to retain some sweetness, the wine is pressed and then fortified with a neutral spirit prior to maturation in small and large format oak casks.
