Style Balanced and fruity
A lovely balance between fleshy fruit, aromatics and delicate spice. A lovely bouquet of yellow peach and nectarine opens up to a musky floral and cinnamon spice nose. Like a freshly plucked pebble from a cold mountain stream. The palate is rich and rounded with a soft mealy character from the extended lees contact. The juicy nectarine characters give the palate a real fleshiness that finishes on a subtle spicy note.

Christine Kernohan has lived in New Zealand for over 40 years, but her peaceful bucolic idyll hasn’t dimmed her feisty Scottish provenance, let alone the accent. She founded the winery in 1996 with her husband David and planted vines on the ancient river terrace of the nearby Ruamahanga River.

The story behind the Jealous Sisters range comes from local Maori legend of beautiful twin sisters Retutai and Tangimoana who lived on the stony banks of the Ruamahanga River. A handsome local warrior named Rautoroa heard of their beauty and came bearing gifts. Their hearts went out to him and soon the sisters became jealous of each other. Tangimoana cruelly tricked her sister and married Rautoroa. Heartbroken, Retutai climbed up into the mountain mists and was never seen again. Jealous Sisters is made with heartfelt passion from these vines.

The winery specialises in Pinot Noir, but talented winemaker Alexis Moore also creates hugely bright and expressive whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. All wines are produced within Wairarapa’s Gladstone district, one of the fastest growing wine production areas on the North Island thanks to its soil and climate that produce low yielding rich concentrated grapes.

This juice was fermented in stainless steel to capture the clean fruit flavours with a portion fermented in older oak barrels to broaden the palate and add complexity. Extended lees contact was used to enhance the palate and structure.
