The Perfect way to sample some of the Best New Australian Wine from the very popular Some Young Punks. Some Young Punks Quickie! Sauvignon Blanc 2014 75cl: A very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge. The nose is floral (blossom), with a slightly green herbaceous note and a background confectionery note. The palate is full and rounded and is reminiscent of a tropical fruit salad, packed with definite passion fruit, lychee and mango flavours. The palate is dry and crisp but this is deceptive because there is a good burst of natural sweetness at the front of the palate as well. Generous, up front and fruity with more crispness and minerality. None of the sweetness but plenty of grip and liveliness on the tight finish. Some Young Punks 'Naked On Roller Skates' Shiraz / Mataro 2013 75cl:

Red, scarlet colour with bright robes. Earthy aromas with cherry and plum, a tad spice, cinammon, pepper and sangria. A frolic of toothsome dark berries on the animated palate, strawberry and black currant, refreshed by light and exhilarating acids. The palate is dense with black fruits, a little quince and juniper spice. A complex wine with full integration between vibrant fruit and subdued treacle oak, immediately ready to enjoy and immensely suited to good food. An expressive McLaren vale blend of 85% Shiarz and 15% Mataro with notes of musk, violets and charcuterie meats.

"There is a type of person for who neither hillsides nor nudity are enough - a type of person who needs rollerskates to enjoy these simple pleasures."

Some Young Punks epitomise the best of New Australia. The winemakers, also knowns as the 'punks' consist of Col McBryde (voted Australia's Young Gun Winemaker of the Year), Jen Gardner (self confessed nerdy yeast expert) and Nic Bourke. Like most of the new breed of interesting, young winemakers in Australia they aren't moved by porty Shiraz and seek instead a sense of place and restraint the wines, influenced by the best of the Old World and the New. Yet being media savvy and having a sense of humour allows this ironically quietly-spoken but earnest bunch to market themselves outrageously and to bring a fresh approach to labelling. Expect to see increasingly alarming labels sported by increasingly interesting and wholly unique wines. Grapes are chosen carefully and thoroughly monitored and purchased locally. In true punks fashion there's a twist to the wine making process; there's some oak fermentation and some solids fermentation.
